France
French wines have long been regarded as the best in the world. That belief has stood the test of time as ‘New World’ wines have emerged to challenge the status quo over the turn of the 21st Century. French wine regions are a perfect mix between terroir and climate. No other winemaking country in the world benefits from such a broad array of cool climates, enabling France to produce the entire spectrum of classic wine styles. Grape variety also comes in play with grapes being uniquely well suited to certain soils. French winemakers inherited this knowledge from the centuries of trial and error leading to the distinctive regional wine styles we know today: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Champagne, Rhône, and Sauternes, just to name a few. The success of French wine can also be traced to the creation of ‘Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée’ (AOC) in 1935, the first country to set up such a system nationwide to ensure quality and traceability.
