Bordeaux
Bordeaux
Bordeaux wines are all made within the Gironde ‘département’. Gironde is the largest ‘département’ in France, and Bordeaux is the largest source of quality wines in the world. The Romans first introduced vines in the first century for local consumption, winemaking has been continuous ever since. Bordeaux benefits from ideal conditions to grow vines namely its soil structure heavy in calcium and rich in limestone. The Gironde estuary shapes the landscape and along with the Garonne and Dordogne rivers irrigate the land and provide an Oceanic climate characterised by warm summers and cool winters with a narrow temperature range and precipitation evenly dispersed throughout the year. Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, created at the request of then Emperor Napoleon III for the ‘Exposition Universelle’, sealed its claim as the finest wine region in the world.
